Xsys, a division of Flint Group that includes Xeikon Prepress, has announced a new flexo plate, the Nyloflex FTM Digital, a flat top dot plate for printing with water-based inks on coated and uncoated paper for aseptic food packaging and corrugated preprint liner. This is in response to consumer demand for more sustainable substrates.

This Xsys Nyloflex FTM Digital plate is designed for printing with water-based inks.

The Nyloflex FTM Digital is a medium hard plate with a smooth surface that’s said to offer good ink transfer and ink laydown out of the box and to be capable of reproducing sophisticated surface screenings. The underlying base material is polyester film. It offers tonal range of 1-98 percent at 60l/cm screen ruling.

It can be exposed in existing systems with standard tube lights or LED UV-A light exposure before solvent processing. It’s suitable for use with water-based inks, though preferably with ethyl acetate content below 15 percent and ketone content below 5 percent.

Xsys claims that its inherent flat top dot technology causes minimum dot wear and significantly less dot gain compared to round top dot plates, which in turn should lead to less issues on-press. The new plate offers fine highlights and a high solid ink density in print, that should give better shelf appeal to the final product.

Simon Top, product manager at Xsys, says that it will help printers switch from printing on plastic film materials to printing on paper substrates with water-based inks, noting: “This latest addition to the Nyloflex plate portfolio will have a broad appeal for printers serving different segments of the packaging production wishing to move to a more sustainable operation, but still retain the ability to produce the highest quality products.”

He described the new plate as the flat top dot counterpart of the Nyloflex ACT Digital plate, adding: “The plate enables printers to easily tackle both coated and uncoated papers without the need to use two different plate types. In the past, a hard plate like the Nyloflex ACE Up and medium hard plate like Nyloflex ACT were often combined to achieve the optimum result. At one customer case, we were able to reduce this complexity for up to 60% of the print jobs by using the Nyloflex FTM Digital.”

The Nyloflex FTM Digital plates are commercially available in 1.14 mm to 2.84 mm thicknesses and in varying plate sizes. It should start to ship by the end of May 2021. You can find further details from xsysglobal.com.
